Cabadbaran Hydroelectric Power Project – Geotechnical Investigation for Detailed Engineering Design

Location
Cabadbaran
Client
Marhham Resources Inc

Project overview

Work shaped by place and purpose.

Galerio Environmental Consultancy Inc. (GECI) undertook a geotechnical investigation for Markham Resources Corporation to evaluate subsurface conditions at the proposed dam site and associated structures of the Cabadbaran Hydroelectric Power Project. The investigation was intended to provide geological and geotechnical information necessary for the detailed engineering design of the proposed hydropower facilities. A total of 14 exploratory boreholes were drilled at designated locations, including three along the proposed dam axis, one at the desander, one at the surge tank, eight within the surge tank–powerhouse area and/or alignment, and one at the proposed pipe bridge/gallery site. The maximum borehole depth reached 32.50 meters. Additionally, 12 test pits were excavated along the conveyance alignment, with depths of up to 3 meters and minimum plan dimensions of 1.5 × 1.5 meters. The field investigation included 15 Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) at the powerhouse, pipe bridge, and surge tank locations, together with nine packer tests at the weir and powerhouse areas to evaluate subsurface permeability. Recovered soil and rock samples were subjected to laboratory testing to characterize their engineering properties and provide technical inputs for foundation evaluation and detailed engineering design.

  • Perform 15 Standard Penetration Tests at designated powerhouse, pipe bridge, and surge tank locations to assess soil penetration resistance.
  • Conduct nine packer tests within the weir and powerhouse areas to assess the permeability characteristics of subsurface rock formations.
  • Collect representative soil and rock samples for laboratory classification and engineering property testing.
  • Compile and evaluate field investigation findings and laboratory results to support the detailed engineering design of the proposed hydropower structures.
  • Regulatory Context:
  • The geotechnical investigation was undertaken to provide technical information supporting the detailed engineering design of the proposed Cabadbaran Hydroelectric Power Project.
  • Laboratory testing included soil classification under ASTM D2487, specific gravity determination under ASTM D854, moisture content determination under ASTM D2216-92, grain size analysis under ASTM D422, and Atterberg limits determination under ASTM D4318, together with unconfined compression testing of rock samples.
  • The investigation findings provide engineering inputs for evaluating subsurface conditions, foundation characteristics, and design considerations for the proposed dam and associated hydropower infrastructure.
